Underground fires, power outages, poor ventilation – these are just some of the dangers your team faces on a daily basis.
Introducing the INELCO SZC “Safe Zone Cone”
specifically designed to guide individuals safely to a refuge bay during a fire or explosion in an underground environment.
Let’s be honest, no one wants to be trapped in the dark, hundreds of metres underground, unsure of where to find safety. But the reality is that underground work is dangerous! Explosions can result in fires and power outages, leaving workers with limited time to reach safety – and Chemical Oxygen Self-Rescuers typically only last about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the product.
The Safe Zone Cone provides both tangible direction and visual cues in low-light conditions. By sliding your hand along the rope, entering the narrow side of the cone, and exiting through the wide side, you’ll know you’re heading in the right direction. The LEDs at both the head and tail of the unit flash to indicate the path to safety.
The INELCO Safe Zone Cone is certified as intrinsically safe for use in hazardous areas, including right up to the coalface. It offers crucial support to individuals in life-threatening situations, helping them navigate to safety. Each cone operates on its own battery-powered supply, independent of a wired system. This means that if a wired system fails, everything downstream stops working. In contrast, if one INELCO Safe Zone Cone fails, the others will still function. This redundancy is essential when lives are at stake.
- Visual and tangible direction to the refuge bay in the event of a fire or explosion
- Ease of installation; cones can be clamped onto the rope after it has been tensioned
- Four years of continuous flashing after activation
- Electronics are enclosed in an extremely robust transparent polycarbonate enclosure
- Suregrip teeth prevent sliding once mounted on the rope
- Special ridges in the enclosure reflect light towards the pathway
- Ease of installation using the reflective INELCO quick clip rope guide (attached to a roof bolt)
- IP66/IP67 enclosure ensures that the electronics remain safe and dry
- LEDs at both ends flash in the direction of safety
- Very quick seven-step installation procedure

Accessories
Each packing box contains six parts:
- One green cone enclosure
- One black encapsulated battery pack
- One PCB with two green LEDs and a female plug
- One green wedge to clamp to clamp the cone to the cable
- One green lid with a sealing gasket
- Four stainless steel cap screw
HOW IT WORKS:
- Place the PCB onto the battery pack. Two holes in the PCB ensure that it does not slide off the battery pack once fitted.
- Slide the battery pack and PCB assembly into the cone.
- Connect the battery pack inline male plug to the PCB inline female plug to activate the LEDs. Slide the cone over the rope through the rope slot in the cone.
- Insert the wedge into the cone enclosure to clamp the cone to the rope.
- Position the lid and ensure it seats firmly onto the gasket.
- Fix the lid to the cone using the four stainless screws.
INTERESTING FACT! In a recent study*, it was found that green is the most visible colour in a dark underground environment with smoke and fire. That’s why the standard of the shelf colour for the Safe Zone Cone is green, and not red as generally expected to be.
